MAGIC TURNS TO TRAGIC
In a time of economic chill, the wind has just got a little colder with the sad news that The Scrumpy, (formerly known as The Scrumpy and Western) is about to publish on-line for the last time.
Here at Burnham Rock we can only say that pretty much anybody and everybody of note on the music scene in the West of England has had their picture on the cover, from Chris Jagger to Joss Stone to The Wurzels to many a teenage hopeful, the list is amazing over the magazine’s 9 year life span.
We had intended to write more of an article here but will instead give you a selection of quotes from some of the people around the South West music scene.
“We first met Bob, (of The Scrumpy) at a gig in Basingstoke attended by seven drunks. Ever since, Bob has been supportive of us and our music and has always promoted our albums. We will miss you so much Bob” - Charlie Rose of State of Undress
“Sad to see you go, you worked so hard to make it a success as a magazine and you helped so many people to have a little success themselves.” - Brian Monk Horizontal Studios
“Bob has always been an upbeat sort of bloke; this country needs more blokes like Bob. He created an iconic magazine that the West of England and beyond can be proud of.”
- Terry Pascoe (ex Wurzel, ex Cornish Wurzel, now with The Flower Power Band)
“Thanks Bob for all the publicity, you will be sorely missed by Alex and myself and no doubt by thousands of others. You backed my son’s project way back in June ‘08 by donating a guitar to his charity and you can only imagine the look on his face when he was on the front cover of The Scrumpy that month.”- Adrian Miles (The Evolution Project)
“I always read The Scrumpy as it gave me the solid reliable information that a professional musician needs to know. You will be much missed.” - Gary French
“We have had a great time working with Bob and The Scrumpy on many projects over the last seven of nine years, promoting live music in the West of England. Bob has always been there for Burnham Rock at events such as Under A Summer Moon, Midsummer Madness and The Gig on The Green and came out fighting when along with ex Mungo Jerry drummer Jamie Roberts and others, we decided to save The Princess Theatre in Burnham on Sea from closure. Bob and The Scrumpy have played a big part in what Burnham Rock has tried to achieve in the past seven or eight years, and are owed some massive thanks.
In the immortal words of Bob Dylan, “The Times Are A-Changin’”.
